Short Synopsis

Joyce has a hidden past that she has blocked from her mind. Now, fragments of these buried memories are beginning to surface. Worried about her state of mind, she takes shelter from a raging storm in an isolated cottage. When mysterious stranger John breaks into her life, Joyce must protect herself and her home. But, her struggle with her inner demons could push Joyce over the edge and doom them both. After a fight and chase through the house, a shocking twist reveals just how fragile Joyce's reality has become.

Filmed partly by candlelight during the worst storms the UK had experienced in two decades, cast and crew channelled this isolation and disturbed atmosphere to create the intense claustrophobia of the film.

Long Synopsis

For many years Joyce has been free of the bad memories that haunted her dreams. Events she was happy to forget.

But fragments are beginning to return. They confuse her and she would rather they were dead and buried.

As Joyce becomes more disturbed, she seeks peace in an isolated cottage, miles from anywhere.

Even in this silent retreat, she cannot escape the troubling images that taunt her and make no sense.

The unexpected arrival of a mysterious young man is a respite from her thoughts - despite her suspicions of how he came to be there.

However, the longer the man remains at the cottage, the more Joyce becomes confused by his possible connection to her.

Horrific memories flood back into her mind, and this man’s insistence that she remember her past could push Joyce over the edge and doom them both.

After a fight and chase through the house, a shocking twist reveals just how fragile Joyce's reality has become.

About the film

'The Redeeming' is an intense psychological thriller with mesmerising performances from Tracey Ann Wood (UK’s Royal National Theatre) and Ryan Wichert (‘The Queen’s Gambit’).

Roger Thomas’s screenplay is a thrilling page-turner, where you just never know what's going to happen next. 'The Redeeming' forces viewers to acknowledge that we all believe what we need to believe in order to survive.

Filmed partly by candlelight during the worst storms the UK had experienced in two decades, cast and crew were trapped in a remote Somerset (SW England) farmhouse, with rising floodwaters cutting them off physically and mentally.

Cast and crew channelled this isolation and disturbed atmosphere to create the intense claustrophobia of the film.

This psychological thriller will appeal to fans of 'Don't Breathe', 'Get Out' and 'Blue Ruin', as well as classic films like 'Shutter Island', 'The Others', 'Misery', 'The Shining' and 'Psycho'.

'The Redeeming' is the debut feature by Brian Barnes ("the world’s most experienced first-time director"), who gave Christopher Nolan ('Interstellar', 'Batman') his first job.

Director Biography - Brian Barnes

Brian Barnes has made nearly 30 short films, including the 5 times award-winning ‘The Urge’, which won a Best Screenplay award and also a Best Film Prize under jury president Timothy Burrill (producer of Roman Polanski’s ‘The Pianist’). ‘The Urge’ was the 8th most watched horror film on IndieFlix for well over a year.

‘The Redeeming’ is Brian’s first feature film and it was nominated for Best Thriller in the UK’s National Film Awards 2019. Brian is constantly developing other projects with its writer, Roger Thomas, including their psychological horror ‘Refracted’ and thriller ‘Reformed’.

Brian’s latest short film ‘Interphase’, which was made under lockdown in April 2020, was one of only 33 films shortlisted by the Lockdown Film Festival 2020 out of 1700 entries from across the world.

Brian has been making films since 1987, mostly working in the corporate video sector, where he has made films for 3 of the world’s trillion-dollar companies - Amazon, Apple and Microsoft - and made 2 charity videos with (then-Prime-Minister) Tony Blair. Other clients include Facebook & Google, and Brian won the Snippies Award for his video for Intel. He has directed over 500 hours of live television on Sky in the UK and SABC2 in South Africa. One of his TV shows was the cult favourite ‘Bikini Beach’.

Brian is renowned amongst fellow British indie filmmakers as “the man who gave Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk, Interstellar, Batman trilogy) his first job”.

Director Statement

Tracey Ann Wood (Joyce) shows potential as “the new Kathy Bates” by delivering a powerhouse performance in this psychological thriller inspired by timeless classics, such as 'Shutter Island', 'The Others', 'Misery', 'The Shining' and 'Psycho'.

Making ‘The Redeeming’ appealed to me because it’s a poignant emotional journey told within the structure of a great genre story, so it has a good blend of appeals for a broad audience.

Specifically, what excited me about this film was the opportunity to redress the balance on a big problem within film as a whole - the lack of meaty roles for women, and the even greater shortage of parts for women over 40. This is definitely a film about a woman for women - something that audiences are crying out for.

I’ve been blessed to work with some fabulous actresses over the course of my career and it really upsets me to see such talent go to waste, because there just aren't the opportunities for them to show their range playing "Wife" or "Doctor" in mainstream media.

As Tracey Ann Wood (Joyce) told me, "I've had a ball playing this part!" I'm so proud to have made it possible for her.
