Based in Cologne, the Italian composer Elisa Quarello brilliantly graduated in Composition from Conservatory of Music “G. B. Martini” Bologna (Italy) in 2014. She studied with Francesco Carluccio and attended composition masterclasses with Salvatore Sciarrino, Manfred Trojahn, Luís Tinoco and opera workshops with Martin Crimp and Klaus Bertisch. Elisa Quarello studied also violin, piano, earned the Choral conducting degree in 2010 and her highly successful educational background also includes additional degrees, that is the Bachelor degree in Italian Literature (2010) and the Master degree in Italian Philology and Literature (2014) both earned at University “Ca' Foscari” of Venice.
In 2024, Elisa Quarello also embarked on a journey into the world of acting, taking lessons and courses under the guidance of renowned coaches and actors Christoph Hilger and Gerhard Roiss. Through these experiences, she began to refine her dramatic craft and deepen her exploration of human emotions.
Elisa Quarello had her international debut as composer with great success of public and critics in April 2015: after winning the “Neue Szenen II” International Composition Competition of Deutsche Oper Berlin, the jury has conferred her the commission of a new opera, OHIO-ObstHaine Im Oktober, which was premiered by musicians of HfM Hanns Eisler Berlin under the conduction of Manuel Nawri. Elisa Quarello was awarded in other competitions, like the International Award “Palazzo del Majno-Torquato Tasso” (2010) and “Felice e Luigi Magone Composition Award„ of the Conservatory of Bologna (2011), and had collaborations with "Zero Crediti" and "Bologna Cello Project" Ensemble, for which Elisa Quarello composed the opera, "Lohengrin-Bologna, 1871", inspired from Lohengrin of Richard Wagner and Macbeth of Giuseppe Verdi (2013).
In July 2019 her composition "Good body, I thank thee!" for soprano, baritone and big orchestra had its brilliant debut with Gulbenkian Orchestra of Lisbon conducted by Pedro Neves at Gulbenkian Foundation. In December 2019, her work for ensemble "Io nel pensier mi fingo" was premiered by FontanaMIX Ensemble of Bologna under the conduction of Francesco La Licata.
By the same Ensemble she received a commission for a new composition for piano, "Nach Kandinsky: drei Impressionen" ("Der gelbe Klang"-"Der rote Klang"-"Der blaue Klang"), which had successfully premiered in Bologna in October 2021 and with this composition Elisa Quarello was Finalist of the International Composition Competition of Festival Musical Durtal (France) in January 2023.
Starting from "Nach Kandinsky: drei Impressionen" Elisa Quarello made two films "Der blaue Klang" (en. "The Blue Sound") in 2022 and "Der rote Klang" (en. "The Red Sound") in 2024, both directed, written and starred by the composer.
Since 2024 "Der rote Klang" film has been earning many awards in Film Festivals, such as "One-Reeler Short FIlm Competition" in Los Angeles, "Belgrade International FIlm Festival", "Art Giraffe International FIlm Festival" in Nice, "8andHalfilm Award" organized by Wild Filmmaker, "American Film Market 2024" in Las Vegas, "Hollywood Best Indie Film Awards", "Greek Film Critics Awards 2024-Cannes 2025 Qualified" in Athens, "Hollywood Indie Film Critics Awards 2024" in Los Angeles, "Scandinavian Film Critics Awards 2025" in Helsinki, "Lights in the Shadow FA", "Special Event at the 75th BERLIN International Film Festival 2025" and "Sofia International Film Festival" 2025.
A real talent for film and opera, an immediate expressive power and a great sensibility for dramaturgy: these are some of the qualities that characterize Elisa Quarello’s work.
