> Log Line - "A non binary and neurodivergent ex cop is interviewed ruthlessly about loneliness and grief by 'The Programe", an artificial emotional intelligence organisation, to teach its 'robots' how to feel.

> “The Programme” is a film about who we are and our understanding of neurodivergence and the idea of seeking a “typical existence”. Michelle Jeram plays the non binary lead character of Drum - “Subject 3756A/b1” who has been chosen out of 4.3 million profiles to be interviewed by ‘The Programme’, - an organisation of emotional intelligence robots, on the subject of loneliness.

> Throughout the film, Drum,an ex police officer, delves deeper into their world, and we are reminded of our connections and perception of belonging, choice and identity within an increasingly disconnected world. As we learn more about the research of ‘The Programme’ we question our current reality and what could so easily be our historical artificial future…

Director Statement

As a first-time female director and filmmaker who identifies as LGBTQIA+ who is autistic and ADHD, I embarked on the creation of "The Programme" after a two-year writing hiatus triggered by the devastating loss of my best friend to suicide. The film weaves together themes of grief and loneliness while challenging us to scrutinise our reality and the societal constraints on the role of artificial intelligence. Rather than approaching the narrative from an outsider's perspective on autism, my goal was to provide a neurodivergent lens, inviting the audience on an uncomfortable yet unflinching journey of discovery. The film aims to spark reflection and reshape perceptions, fostering a deeper understanding of both the intricate layers of grief and the complex intersectionality of neurodivergent experiences.

From the outset, assembling a diverse cast and crew across various spectrums of difference was a priority for me. To authentically portray stories of diversity, I believe in seeking out distinct voices and perspectives. It's through this deliberate selection that we can then focus on honing in on the shared experiences and emotions that bind us all together.

I specifically wrote the film for Michelle Jeram, who portrays the non binary lead character. After witnessing her compelling performance in a BBC drama, I was struck by her singular quality and felt compelled to create a narrative that would really push the boundaries of her acting. "The Programme" relies heavily on prosaic dialogue to convey the stream of consciousness of the autistic and ADHD character. This directorial choice, in a society accustomed to fast-paced drama, is a deliberate and bold move. It challenges the conventional narrative pace, allowing the audience to immerse themselves in the intricacies of the character's thoughts and emotions, making for a unique and thought-provoking viewing experience.

The soundtrack, penned by the incredible Megan Black, lends "The Programme" a haunting and dramatic backdrop, skillfully capturing the film's dark undertones while infusing it with heart and grit. Black's musical composition enhances the emotional depth of the narrative, creating a powerful synergy between the auditory and visual elements of the film.

My aspiration for the film is that it serves as a powerful emotional catalyst, prompting viewers to reassess their perspectives on differences. Ultimately, I aim for "The Programme" to be more than just a film – a force for meaningful reflection and a driver for positive change in how we perceive and embrace differences.
