The Play

In a place that looks like a makeup room behind a theater stage, there is 'Minju'. The sounds of dialogue keep pouring out, perhaps coming from the ongoing play.

Amidst these sounds, she practices. However, her voice doesn't come out well, and the sounds of the dialogue make her uneasy.

Minju, looking at the script she had set aside with hesitant eyes, gets inundated with dialogue sounds that seem like family conversations when she starts reading the script. Overwhelmed by the sound, she crumples the script. She doesn't want to act anymore. However, before she realizes it, her face is adorned with makeup for 'The Play'. Looking at herself in the mirror, she appears resigned and flattens out the script again.

A red spot protrudes on her made-up face. To take the stage, she must cover this spot.

The actress, no, Minju, closed the door of her brother's house, and she stepped into the elevator. When she turned around, her face, which seemed to have put on even thicker makeup, almost absurdly theatrical, was visible. Soon, other people from different floors also got on the elevator. She finally removed the thick makeup she had to maintain in front of the people she loved the most, only here, in the presence of strangers. The makeup that had concealed the vulnerable true self, which soon bursts forth.

Artist Statement:
DaSol Park is a South Korean filmmaker whose work explores Young Korean womens' dillema and struggle under the rapid shift of Korean society in recent 30 years. Dominantly depicting closer relationships such as romantic relationships, familial relationships, and friendships, Park highlights the hidden diconnections and hirarchies.

South Korea has the "Noonchi" culture, in which you have to be always able to read the room, the hirarchy, the system. It starts from the very beginning with your gaurdians, at your home. Treated as the belonings of parents, children learn the hirarchy as the first thing in their life. Park visits this dark side of familial relationship in her 5-minute surrealist short film "The Play."

Her interest in this aspect continues in her slice-of-life short film "Fix You." A school could be a hell especially in a country which is ranked the highest suicide rate in the world. Park chose a delicate approach to show distorted self image of young female characters.
