The Plane

Makar is 11 years old and he is already an adult. The war took away his childhood. Makar from Mariupol. By February 24, he had a mother, a father and his own home. Now he lives in an orphanage and tries to understand why everything has changed so much.
Dedicated to the children of war.

This film is part of an upcoming anthology — a manifesto, an artistic form of memorialization. It brings together twelve stories, each inspired by a traditional Ukrainian commemorative dish prepared for the bright holiday of Christmas. Twelve shared points of pain, memory, dignity, and resilience.

“The Plane” is dedicated to Mariupol and to all the orphans whose lives have been shattered by the Russian-Ukrainian war. More than 16,000 children have been taken hostage by Russia. Thousands more have lost their parents and now live in Ukraine or in evacuation across the world.

After February 24, we began to understand who we really are. This film is a cry. A wound. And an honor — to every one of them.

It is a view of war through the eyes of a child — piercing, honest, filled with both pain and hope.

Director Statement

“The Plane,” “Someday You’ll Understand,” and “Magda” are all part of something greater —
an anthology, a manifesto, an artistic form of memorializing the victims of war and the heroism of our people.

A cry to the world.
A wound — our wound.
An honor — to each and every one.

Only after February 24 did we begin to understand who we truly are.

Twelve stories. Twelve dishes.
Twelve points of shared pain, memory, pride, and true strength.
