The Pink Champions

The Pink Champions brings you inspiring stories of four Breast Cancer survivors from Kilifi and Mombasa, Kenya.

This 25-minute documentary captures the distinctive struggles and triumphs of the four ladies in their fight against Breast Cancer.

Christine Lugusa, is the Principal of Kizurini Secondary School in Kaloleni Sub County, Kilifi County. She narrates how she came to learn that she had Breast Cancer and how she coped with the situation. This documentary also shows how she uses her experience to impart good health education to her fellow teachers, students and how she ensures the information trickles down to the entire community.

Fatma ‘Pilly’ Shambi hails from Frere Town, Mombasa. She has a unique story of pure love courtesy of her supportive husband. This documentary shows how the Swahili couple collaboratively goes against all odds to fight stereotypes, stigma and other negative influences surrounding Breast Cancer.

Martha Njora is an ambitious career lady living in Mombasa who is fighting Breast Cancer. She holds onto her ambitions as motivating factors as she strives to beat the scourge and be an inspiration to members of the community. She explains how she undergoes breast reconstruction surgery and her encouraging recovery journey. She jubilantly expresses how she even got blessed with a baby, whom she breastfeeds with the reconstructed breast.

Rosemary Kaibunga, is a Malindi-based lady who tells her emotional story and recovery journey from Breast Cancer. She speaks of how she suffered rejection in marriage due to the condition; lost the custody of her children; and opted to fight alone without even involving her relatives. She narrates her ordeal and how she eventually finds the courage and formula to beat Breast Cancer despite the prevailing hurdles.

Generally, this documentary reveals the real struggles of women diagnosed with Breast Cancer; demystifies the myths and misconceptions of Breast Cancer; and inspires people to believe that it is actually possible to beat Breast Cancer regardless of its enormous challenges.
