The Phone Call
A college student answers a routine call from his mother, expecting a brief conversation before returning to his day, but quickly finds himself trapped in an endless stream of stories and small details he barely listens to. As the call drags on, boredom turns to frustration, then guilt, and he struggles to remain present and polite while mentally drifting further away. What begins as a simple inconvenience slowly becomes a reflection on distance, obligation, and the difficulty of truly listening to the people who care most. When he finally confesses that he has not been paying attention, the moment offers a brief sense of honesty and relief, only for his mother to cheerfully begin the story again from the very start, leaving him caught once more in the cycle, forced to confront the quiet consequences of tuning out love.

Emma Olsen is a filmmaker whose passion for storytelling comes from a deep love for people and the relationships that shape them. After moving to Florida at a young age, she was drawn to stories centered on love, family, and faith, themes that continue to define her work. While often working behind the scenes as a first assistant director, Emma developed a strong appreciation for collaboration, timing, and performance, elements that influence her approach as a director. This thesis film marks a turn toward comedy, but her storytelling remains grounded in intimacy and honesty. She is interested in finding humor within real emotion and creating moments that feel both bold and sincere. Emma believes comedy can reveal truth in unexpected ways, allowing audiences to connect through laughter and vulnerability. Through this film, she hopes to tell a warm, character driven story that reflects the beauty and complexity of human connection.
