My name is Dewald Demas and I am a film graduate with a lifelong passion for storytelling.
I began filmmaking with nothing more than a phone, creating short films whenever I could. As my passion grew I saved for my first camera and continued developing my craft with the help of friends who enjoyed creating with me.
I went on to study film at SAE Institute South Africa. I also had a dedicated YouTube phase where I produced a large amount of content and learned through constant trial and error. In my professional work I have applied and expanded my skills across a range of projects. This includes filming interviews, live streaming sporting events, as well as shooting and editing ad campaigns. I have been able to gain wide experience in a short amount of time.
I love storytelling, experimenting with different techniques, and most of all creating work that makes people feel something long after the screen fades to black.
If we want our characters to feel real, we need to draw from real life.
You cannot truly write about a fireman without ever speaking to one or understanding that world. That was one of the most important lessons I learned in film school and since then I have made a habit of shaping characters from the people I know and sometimes from parts of myself.
Our story unfolds at a house party. I chose this setting because parties often feel cinematic by nature. There is always the sense that anything could happen. Someone works up the courage to talk to the person they like, friendships shift, tempers flare and memories are made. Nights like these reveal who we are and we learn from them whether we intend to or not.
The core message of this story is that life becomes what we choose to make of it. At parties it is easy to believe that this one night will be perfect, especially after a difficult week, but the perfect night is an illusion. It is the unpredictable moments, good or bad, that shape the experience and stay with us.
