The Noise Around Her Black
After the sudden death of a husband and father, a widow and her three children find themselves at the center of a burial that offers more spectacle than solace.
Set against the backdrop of Nigerian tradition, the film quietly observes how communal ritual can deepen the family’s isolation rather than ease their grief.
The Noise Around Her Black is a portrait of mourning, exploring how culture’s insistence on outward display can obscure the quiet needs of a family left behind.

Odaro Eguavoen is an emerging Nigerian filmmaker and multidisciplinary creative whose practice is rooted in architecture and environmental storytelling. Trained to think spatially and structurally, he later expanded into game development, writing, and digital art—disciplines that continue to inform his visual storytelling. His work gravitates toward the subtle and peripheral aspects of grief, often exploring how memory and absence shape lived experience.
With his debut short film, The Noise Around Her Black, Odaro brings a deliberate and collaborative approach to directing, balancing technical precision with emotional resonance and creating space for intimate dialogue between form, story, and performance
With The Noise Around Her Black, I wanted to create a world that mirrors the quiet yet overwhelming presence of grief. My background in architecture taught me to think about how space shapes human experience, and I carried that same thinking into this film. Every frame is designed as an emotional environment—whether through silence, shadow, or rhythm—where loss can be both intimate and expansive. For me, filmmaking is not only about telling a story but constructing a space where audiences can inhabit the emotional weight of the characters. This film is my attempt to world-build through cinema, offering a landscape of grief that is both isolating and connective, fragile and enduring.
