The Mayor of Palomares

A drought-stricken Spanish village faces ruin until their resourceful Mayor grasps salvation in the shape of an unexploded American H-bomb.
#
In 1966, a mid-air collision results in a USAF bomb falling near the drought-stricken Spanish village of Palomares. Eduardo Garcia, the Mayor, considers it a gift from the gods. Not knowing that the unexploded bomb is actually a nuclear weapon he conceals it, and then makes a deal to reveal its whereabouts to the Americans in exchange for the drilling of a new well.
Fearing a serious diplomatic crisis if the true nature of the bomb is discovered, the Americans send the officious Major Kinsella to find it without delay. He arrives in Palomares accompanied by his translator Sergeant John Delgado. Delgado soon realizes that if Kinsella finds the bomb he’ll renege on Garcia’s deal. Delgado’s sympathies lie with the villagers. Kinsella eventually discovers the bomb’s hiding place but, to everyone’s surprise, it has vanished.
Garcia deduces that Basque nationalists have taken the bomb to use in a plot to assassinate General Franco in Granada, unaware that it will wipe out the entire city. Garcia and Delgado embark on a quest to track down the Basques and recover the weapon in order to avert a nuclear disaster ... and secure the future of Palomares.
With ingenuity, they find and outsmart the Basques, leading to a final dramatic showdown when the bomb ends up in the sea, just where the US government want it. The weapon is recovered from the sea by the US 6th Fleet, thus avoiding the diplomatic crisis ... and Palomares has a new well.
