The Long Life of a Snitch

The first time I thought about writing was when I blurted out that I was writing a story. I was 17. At that time I wasn't writing any story – it was a show-off, but I wanted to surprise the girl. After a while, she said that she wanted to read it, and by that time I almost forgot that I had ever said something like that. But I didn't shirk, I just thought, "Why not?" and wrote a story. I broke up with the girl (not because of the story) but the stupidity blurted out in the style of the Shakhnazarov’s “Courier” determined my future life, at least for today.

I was writing stories and getting published until someone told me that I should do it more seriously. Doing it more seriously meant going to the university. I thought about it and agreed, but I had to figure out which one I’m going to. While choosing between a literary institute and VGIK I for the first time in my life discovered a commercial streak or just greed. To put it simply, I chose the movie industry. Well, it seems to me not in vain, and it turned out not to be greed (not only in it), but also just the process itself is fascinating. I wrote some scripts, but deep down I knew it very well - I had to direct them myself. And I just started doing that. Although I graduated from VGIK as a screenwriter, I felt more like a director. Having two short films behind my back, the third one in the works. I think I set a good trend, so let it continue to be so.

There was always one thought that amused me during all this: you come up with some nonsense, and 20-30 people with serious faces turn it into reality. And standing on set, I often think how strange all this is and at the same time how cool it is.

Впервые я задумался о том, чтобы начать писать, когда ляпнул что пишу рассказ. Мне было 17. Никакой рассказ я не писал – это был выпендрёж, но девушку я удивить хотел. Через какое-то время она захотела его прочитать, а я почти забыл, что об этом говорил. Но увиливать не стал, подумал: «почему бы и нет?» и написал рассказ. С девушкой расстался (не из-за рассказа) но ляпнутая в стиле Шахназаровского Курьера глупость определила мою дальнейшую жизнь, по крайней мере на сегодня.

Я писал рассказы и печатался пока мне не сказали, что надо бы заниматься этим посерьёзнее. Посерьёзнее это значило в институт. Я подумал и согласился, только надо было понять в какой. Выбирая между литературным и ВГИКом впервые в жизни обнаружил в себе коммерческую жилку или просто жадность. Проще говоря выбрал кино. Ну и как мне кажется не зря, и дело оказалось не в жадности (не только в ней), просто сам процесс увлекательный. Я писал сценарии, но для себя хорошо понимал – надо мне их самому ставить. И я просто начал этим заниматься. Выйдя из ВГИКа сценаристом, больше ощущал себя режиссёром. Две короткометражки за спиной, третья в работе. Хорошая тенденция, пусть так и будет дальше.

В этом всём меня всегда забавляла одна мысль: ты придумал какую-нибудь ерунду, а 20-30 человек с серьёзными лицами воплощают её в реальность. И стоя на площадке часто думаю, как странно всё это и одновременно круто.
