The Last Honour
In the backdrop of the deadliest pandemic in a century, Covid-19, India and its regions, including Assam, witnessed a devastating toll on human lives. Among those who selflessly served, yet went unrecognised, were the Chandals, including Paramesh Sarkar. Amidst cremating over 1,700 Covid victims, Paramesh faced a heart-wrenching personal tragedy when his pregnant wife passed away due to a sudden heart attack. Despite his relentless dedication, he was barred from his own village. 'Mukhagni' narrates the poignant tale of Paramesh, a Chandal, who valiantly carried out his duties, but whose sacrifices remained unnoticed, shedding light on the untold stories of countless unsung heroes during the pandemic.

People around the world, except doctors, policemen, journalists, were largely confined to their homes during the Covid pandemic. During this time of unprecedented crisis, when lives remained locked at homes, eminent journalist and novelist Jitumoni Bora saw a man doing a special job in Guwahati with a few of his associates. That man, who was on duty as a Chandal at the Covid crematorium, worked tirelessly day and night to burn the bodies that overwhelmed the crematorium, one after the other. When I read this real story written by Jitumoni Bora, I was quite moved and immediately wanted to make it into a movie and show it to people all over the world. 'Mukhagni' was born as a result of that.
