The Landscape of Human Essence

In the remote Macedonian mountains, 80-year-old Ljubica lives deeply connected to the land of her ancestors, surrounded by wild, untouched nature. Her daily life unfolds in harmony with the rhythm of the landscape—she gathers medicinal herbs, mushrooms, and forest fruits, tends a herd of goats, makes homemade cheese, and draws strength from mountain springs. Despite solitude, daily challenges, and the threat of wolves, she finds balance and a sense of freedom in simple rituals.
Ljubica is one of the last remaining residents of the village, where only seven people remain. Like her, they are deeply rooted in this land, which has been home to their families for generations. Their lives are a testament to human resilience, humility, and the delicate yet unbreakable bond between people and the environment they call home.
The short documentary The Landscape of Human Essence combines raw reality with poetic animation of memories. It captures the fragility and relentlessness of life in a village where time blurs its boundaries, and the past quietly merges with the present.

Director Statement

I first visited the Demir Hisar region in North Macedonia in 2013 as part of an international artist residency in the village of Sloestica. Since then, I have been returning regularly to document the lives of people in remote mountain areas, where traditional ways of living persist despite increasing challenges.
Although these lives may appear calm, they are shaped by isolation, limited access to services, and the gradual departure of younger generations. What remains is a fragile yet resilient community, holding on to a deep connection with the land.
Moving from photography to film allowed me to expand this long-term work beyond the image. By combining observation, sound, and the presence of the protagonists, I seek to capture not only the visible reality, but also the inner landscape of a disappearing way of life.
