Best Horror Screenplay
My day job is a full time Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep physician in St. Paul, Minnesota for 24 years now attempting to turn screenwriter. I completed UCLA's Professional Program in screenwriting in 2023.
This completed script is 96 pages long. I started writing this from my home in St. Paul, Minnesota at the flashpoint of George Floyd’s murder and the wake of the protests when I had a few days between ICU shifts during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Jumbee’s ah Come is a thrilling possession horror script with a tone of Insidious. It's bolstered with a strong premise and serious contemporary thematic relevance. It integrates Black / Caribbean mythology with a genre of horror film usually associated with Catholicism (Exorcist, etc.). The focus on systemic racism and the justice system gives the story weight, but not didactic or preachy. It was selected as a finalist at Los Angeles Crime & Horror Film Festival in 2023 and a quarterfinalist in the Filmmatic Horror Screenplay Awards Season 8. This script plays like Get Out meets The Shining.
