Diagnosed with Bipolar II, Ben's work explores characters who struggle to feel at home in their heads or society. His screenplays PHX TO KBP (2022) and CHASING SHADOWS (2015) were Nichol Fellowship semifinalists. His 2016 pilot WATCH THE SKIES was the top ranked pilot on the Blcklst website and he has directed commercials for Mcdonald's, Netflix, and others. Ben cries listening to John Williams and writing this in third person nearly killed him.
Ben is an LA based, Dallas born screenwriter and director who refuses to write in third person after this sentence. I grew up (ahh, much better) in the suburbs of North Dallas… where I felt completely out of place. My family bounced in-and-out of twelve different houses before I graduated high school, we bought groceries with food stamps, and had multiple cars repossessed. I’m also one of the eighty-six million Americans living with a diagnosable mental illness, Bipolar Type II. In other words, despite my flagrant extroversion (hello, showbiz!!!), I grew up an outsider. Thanks to my cinephile grandpa, movies were my escape and filmmaking became my therapy. Mental health, a desire for connection, family bonds/baggage, and faith — spiritual or amorphous — are themes I often explore in my work. I also love to make shit that simply lets people forget about their shit.
