Immigrants began with a simple question: what does empathy look like in moments of fear and uncertainty?

The story is science fiction, but the emotions behind it are very real. Together with my team at BeatMapSquad, we connected deeply with this idea because the three of us are immigrants from Colombia currently living in London. Like many people around the world, we left our home country in search of opportunities and dreams. While some people migrate by choice, many others migrate because they have no other option.

Through Marisol and Javi, the film explores how a simple act of kindness can change the experience of someone facing fear, displacement, or uncertainty. Empathy can make an enormous difference in the life of a person or a community.

As an animator who has worked for many years in large visual effects productions, I was also interested in exploring how emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence can support independent storytelling. AI allowed us to experiment with visual worlds and bring this story to life in a new way.

At its heart, Immigrants is a reminder that even in unfamiliar worlds, empathy is what helps us recognize each other as human.
