Director Statement

On the heels of my previous film HOODIES' completion and festival run, I was looking to do a new kind of project. Hoodies was a tightly scripted farcical genre piece. I wanted my next movie to be loose and down-to-earth. I entered into this project with a story about subject matter that appealed to me - and still appeals to me: seeking connection. What is it like to long for someone who is unattainable? How strongly can connections be forged through mere forces of attraction? Does the pleasure of a bond outweigh the pain and awkwardness of pursuing such a bond? These and more were the kinds of thoughts that went into this story. I was really excited to work with two actors as talented as CaSandra and the incomparable Yonn. These two lifted THE GYM GIRL in ways I could have only dreamed. When a filmmaker has collaborators like that, it is a gift. As for crew, the amount of positions they all worked for this movie is tantamount to their helpfulness and prowess. The countless times they appear in the credits speaks to this.
