Born in 2002, Markham, Ontario, Srutika pays homage to her cultural identity as a first-generation Tamil Canadian daughter to immigrant parents. Exhibiting these key themes, Srutika recently developed her first short film screenplay called "The Full Cycle". Srutika strives to become the first screenwriter and director in her family and to represent her community within the media through her work.
Srutika graduated with an H.B.A. degree in her undergrad programs: major in Arts and Media Management, and minors in Studio Arts, and Literature & Film Studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC). She plans to pursue Masters and work towards a career in the film industry.
Film is a complex entity that has a complex way of expressing thoughts, opinions, ideas, imaginations, or scenarios. It gives such creative freedom to choose what and how I or others want to share their story. I share my story of my experiences, past experiences that became memories that became nostalgic memories that first stemmed from my childhood. Film is my way of storytelling.
Through my work, I aim to capture the documentation of my younger self and the transformation of becoming a young-adult woman. This transformation may include themes of anxiety versus confidence, alienation versus acceptance, low self-esteem versus self-love, and many more to explore.
My experiences as a Woman of Colour (WOC) also play a pivotal role in my stories. It shapes me and how I translate the real world through my work.
