The Final Act

‘The Final Act’ is extremely personal and holds a very special place in my heart. If you ask me for a one-line premise I’ll say the film’s about “An actor looking back at his past mistakes, getting ready for his last performance, his Final Act.” But if you let me peel few layers, I would then tell you how this film is about loss, feeling incomplete, handling grief, getting closure on something you know you just can’t, no matter how hard you try, but most importantly about me losing my grandfather.
Losing someone is always difficult, especially when it’s unexpected and when you physically can’t be there with them or give them that last farewell or send-off you promised.

My grandfather passed away couple years back when I was in my first year of grad school. Due to certain unforeseen circumstances, I couldn’t speak to him when he was in his deathbed nor was I able to fly back to India in time for his cremation, and that affected me in a way I really didn’t see coming. I have been extremely close with my grandparents ever since the day I was born, so not being there with him or even talk to him before he left, played with my head for quite some time, and that’s precisely why I decided to pen it down and let my feelings flow onto paper. That’s how ‘The Final Act’ was born. It was my farewell letter to my granddad who loved movies and was an extra in Indian films for close to 30 years.

This was my tribute to him, someone who always wanted to be a star, a main lead but was never given a chance for various reasons. Well in my film, he was a star, who had fans, awards, adulation, and a grandson who absolutely admired and loved him.
