Carolyn Bacon, Writer and Co-Director:
This film was inspired by watching my mother, a career nurse, come to terms with her mother’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis. She took charge of her mom’s care, often at odds with her siblings. I watched my mom game the system to get my grandmother better care - but also keep her guard up with medical jargon and distance herself from the more immediate pain her siblings felt. Expertise, especially in science, can be a double-edged sword when it prevents human connection. In the end, no special knowledge or access can control a loved one’s decline. There is deep vulnerability in not knowing. It is at this knife’s edge of science and art where families grapple with how to care for their loved ones.
