The Death of the Hired Man

After leaving Warren and Mary shorthanded during the haying season to presumably work on a farm offering fixed wages, Silas returns exhausted and desperate, seeking shelter before winter. Although he is resolved to make amends and determined to show young Harold Wilson the value of lessons that cannot be taught in books, his abilities have significantly diminished, and he appears to have little time left.
