The Clock Spirits Awakening
During the decade 1940s, a song called Gloomy Sunday was known as a suicide song because many suicides were recorded related to this song. Particularly, this song was listened by a French lady after the death of her boyfriend who was a clock engineer at that time. The Gloomy Sunday listening led the French lady to commit suicide as well. Dying this way did not allow the French lady’s soul rest in peace but returned with a desire to harm others.
Cheata, a girl who lived with her father and stepmother after her biological mother, Chenda, left the family. Cheata had mentally and physically suffered from her stepmother. And this suffering made her depressed. Cheata had held her mother's photo and listened to her mother's lullaby every night in order to heal her heartache and depression. Through the terrible time of her depression, Cheata fell under the control of the French lady’s spirit that stayed with the Clock.

Leak Lyda is a Cambodian filmmaker whose passion for storytelling transcends boundaries. With a keen eye for detail and a profound understanding of cinematic language, Leak Lyda has carved a distinguished career marked by innovation, creativity and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
Born and raised in Kompongthom province, Cambodia, Lyda discovered a deep-seated love for cinema at a young age. However, back in the days, there wasn’t any schools or formal education for filmmaking. So, Lyda ended up studying IT for his tertiary education. With a humble beginning, Lyda started his journey in production with Sky High Production, a Thai production company, in 2007, followed by Rock Production in 2011. In 2012, Lyda founded LD Pictures and since then, there are more than 20 feature films made.
Lyda first became known to audiences with his directorial debut film, ‘Arb Wears Helmet I & II’ in 2012. In 2019, Lyda’s horror film, ‘The Clock Spirits Awakening’ achieved great results at the Cambodia National Film Festival by winning multiple awards including The Best Film of The Year 2019, The Best Director of Year 2019, The Best Film Editor of Year 2019, The Best Sound Editor of the Year 2019, The Best Actress and Actor of the Year 2019. The film also received awards at the Horror Bowl Movie Award, India for The Best Film of the Year 2019, The Best Director of the Year 2019 Mr. Lyda LEAK, The Best Actor of the Year 2019, Mr. Piseth SORN. ‘The Clock Spirits Awakening’ was also distributed and shown in multiple territories in Asia.
In 2020, Lyda was also the director of the project ‘Red Wall’ that was disrupted by the pandemic. Lyda’s latest project include ‘Grade 12E’, a horror film. 2023 directed ‘Rent Boy’ a comedy starring multiple famous actors from different South East Asian countries and is scheduled to be released in multiple territories and “The Night Curse of Reatrei” a horror film. In 2024, he just completed a film “ Neang Neath ” a horror and comedy film.

More than 10 years and around 30 movies later, LD Picture may have found its breakthrough. On this scary film it took a year to produce to ensure a high quality to target the international audience. The Clock is the first movie being “ Exported ” to other country. This is very huge opportunity for a Cambodian movie to be screened internationally. Following a year of writing and polishing the screenplay, the big challenges are yet to come in the film’s production.
There are three important points that make me believe this film can be a success on the international market. First, we’ve produced a script we hope will prove appealing to an international market, as it is based on the famous Hungarian Suicide Song. Second, our technical equipment is high and comparable to Hollywood standards. Thirdly, the post production will be helped by local and international industry experts”.
