The Breeders

"The Breeders" is a social drama, a road movie on foot. It narrates the journey in search of help undertaken by Juana and Carmela, two pregnant women, from a peripheral neighborhood where they live to hospitals in two cities on the border between Argentina and Brazil. In this journey they will find the lack of solidarity and the absence and abandonment of the State, a situation that leads them to discover themselves and create a strong friendship.

Director Statement

"The Breeders" was born when I read in a newspaper about a mother who lived an odyssey to get her baby born. This woman was from a small town where I grew up in the province of Salta, Argentina. Everything I lived in my childhood left a trace in my social conscience: I saw poverty, lack of money and food, ignorance, excessive wealth, violence and solidarity. So this film, in many aspects, resumes everything I've done and experienced along the years. From that seed for "Breeders" until today, ten years have passed, during which the project was changing and turning while everyone involved was waiting for its concretion, in latent calm. Until we finally arrived at the moment of shooting in a region of the border between the cities of San Antonio, Misiones, Argentina and San Antonio, Brasil; this location, with its landscape, its people and its way of being gave, to the film and to the world we created within, a drive and an essential, true poetics. What we found there got through us.
The main characters are women on the sidelines, which solidarize with each other; who challenge marginalization and cross over obstacles, fears and suffering, building a sisterhood link among themselves.
