Director Statement

I loved the idea of exploring the very primal motivations behind how a friendship can develop, particularly between two people who are initially pitted against each other. Not only that, but also
seeing how these motivations can triumph even in the most inhuman situations; like a war.

The wilderness which those characters move through: the mountains, the forests and the snow, becomes another obstacle, another antagonistic force which the two enemies must fight together. Through that hardship they begin to see each other’s humanity and connect, just as we did on the set. I believe that the magic of a great film can be born from its challenges and limitations. The loneliness, the feeling of complete isolation and the stress of being left alone, fueled me and also helped to deliver the intense and deeply real performances of child actor Claudio Magno (The Boy) and co-star Lukas Stöger (The Soldier).

These are real people struggling together for a common goal, and this mirrors the journey of these characters. For me, these ‘real life’ elements are the key ingredients to creating a film with soul. Whilst the heart of the film is certainly focused on the fragile connection of the main characters, we were also able to create thrilling set pieces and exciting chase sequences, which balance and heighten the more tender moments. In this way I believe the audience will connect with our characters and their adventure, just as I did.

The characters come together for the benefit of each other, just as we did on set. The collaborative process, which was encouraged at every stage of production with this film is something I am most proud of. That is ultimately the message of this film: that we are better when we are united together.
