The Bird Never Lands | AI experimental short film

A dream-like narrative in infinite layers where time unravels and meaning is concealed in fragments. A silent bird guides a lone traveler through changing rooms, recurring symbols, and impossible landscapes. Every image takes us further inward — not towards escape, but towards memory. A hypnotic meditation on identity, loss, and the question we cannot answer.

Director Biography - Réka Harsányi

Réka Harsányi DLA is a Hungarian filmmaker and visual artist whose work explores the complex and evolving relationship between the language of film and artificial intelligence. Her artistic practice is rooted in the realm of visual narrative and its associated elements such as atmosphere, symbol, and the psychological dimension of space. Through a highly controlled and curated visual language, Harsányi’s films achieve a level that goes beyond narrative and enters the realm of the perceptual. Her most recent works have been an exploration of the potential for artificial intelligence to be used as a tool within a highly controlled and curated artistic framework. Rather than seeing artificial intelligence as a tool or a medium that can be harnessed as a novelty within film and art, Harsányi sees it as a medium that can expand the very form and structure of film. Her films have been centered around a series of repetitive elements such as birds, keys, suitcases, and clocks. These elements serve as a form of connective tissue within Harsányi’s highly curated and controlled visual language. Her concept of time within the context of film does not advance or move but rather deepens. Space does not expand but rather collapses into itself. Harsányi’s work has been an exploration of memory and the nature of identity.

Her style also combines photorealistic elements and a touch of surrealism, where the environment, though realistic, also seems a bit askew due to the symbolic elements included within the work. The use of silence and the pacing are also essential elements, allowing the work to breathe and encouraging the viewer to contemplate the work and the experience being represented.

In her work, such as her experimental short films and her music videos created using AI, the filmmaker explores the possibility of infinite spatial elements and the use of recursive systems of images. The use of spoken word and sound elements creates a meditation on the cinematic environment, where the audience is not given clear answers, but rather left to contemplate the work.
Harsányi also contributes to the dialogue on the authorship and responsibility of artists within the context of the use of artificial intelligence and the changing face of the cinematic world and its practice, where the use of technology creates a new form of reflection rather than progression.

The films of Réka Harsányi are introspective, visually detailed, and dedicated to exploring the use of new technologies to create a new form of poetic and philosophical inquiry, and through her work, the filmmaker continues to develop a new cinematic language that explores the internal world, where the use of images and the possibility of using images as a form of thought and memory are explored.

Director Statement

This film is based on the idea that dreams do not progress, but rather become deeper. The idea was to create an infinite visual descent where the viewer is led deeper by the repetition of symbols, rather than being led outward. I have used generative tools to create a world of repetition and evolution, similar to how our memories are constantly evolving.

SYNOPSIS
With the guidance of a quiet bird, a lone figure moves through spaces where time moves backwards, where keys unlock nothing, and where objects repeat, change, and disappear as reality collapses in on itself. This is a surrealist exploration of memory and self, an infinite dream that is never quite awake.
