The Bear Hunter
Why kill a grizzly bear? The Bear Hunter follows a lifelong sport hunter into the Northern Yukon in the search for violent confrontation with the animal he loves most. With an empathy for the rarely-discussed spiritual motivations of the hunt, this film turns over strange stones, exploring ethical contradictions in the hunting act and searching for meaning in a bloody, atavistic pursuit. The Bear Hunter is a wildly original, challenging investigation into the desire to hunt in the modern world.
The Bear Hunter is the first installment of a series in production that will visit Indigenous hunting communities in the Canadian Arctic, Northern Japan and Romania in 2025, culminating in the release a feature documentary.

As a lifelong hunter, I have always been dismayed by my community's failure to acknowledge the violent contradictions at the core of our ancient pursuit: why would you kill an animal that you love? Why kill for any reason other than to eat? Why kill in a modern world at all? This film follows my father, my flawed teacher in these pursuits, to no conclusive answer. The only story we can tell is one of humility, vulnerability and the worship of some mystery.
