Director Biography - Mona Shahab, Desdemona Dallas

Mona Shahab and Desdemona Dallas are a bi-coastal filmmaking duo crafting character-driven stories that blend humor, vulnerability, and a distinct visual style. Shahab, an Iranian-American writer based in Los Angeles with roots in comedy, has developed award-winning screenplays and sharp, character-forward storytelling across film and digital platforms. Dallas, a non-binary photographer turned filmmaker, brings a focus on personal narratives that speak to broader social issues. Together, they merge comedic sensibility and visual lyricism to create intimate, stylized worlds that feel both playful and deeply human.

Director Statement

Boobi Jean, the fabulously idle heir to clever immigrant hoteliers, spends her days lounging in a forgotten California resort town, once a destination for Hollywood’s elite. Boredom, houseflies, and a whisper of ambition pry her from the desert’s dusty comforts, sending her bumbling toward a life of her own making. The filmmakers combined nostalgia, kitsch, fictionalized American history, and a sense of Iranian diasporic longing to create a fantastical, though fragmented, world--and a character that embodies the delusions required to survive in it.
