Angela Asatrian is an Armenian-American social worker and filmmaker.
During her master's in social work program, she studied human trafficking in the Philippines where she produced a student film highlighting the horrors of the sex trafficking industry. It was during this time that she realized her true passion: combining her social work experience and undaunting need to help those who are disenfranchised by bringing forth the awareness of their situation to the masses in film.
It is through her films that Angela hopes to give a voice to those individuals who may not have an avenue or opportunity to do so.
On September 27, 2020 the country of Artsakh (also known as Nagorno Karabakh) was attacked by Azerbaijan. My cousin, Garnik, was killed on the first day of the war, he was only 19 years old.
During the conflict, Azerbaijan with the help of Turkey, committed unspeakable war crimes and grotesque crimes against humanity.
Seeing this injustice and the horrors it inflicted on an entire nation of people saddened me. And yet there was nothing being done to right these wrongs or even bring awareness to the injustices taking place. After my cousins passing I made it my mission to investigate this war, to share the stories of survivors, and show the world what has happened.
My hope is that these crimes will not go unseen and unheard of. My hope is that by bringing awareness to this dire situation others will be inspired to act. My hope is that I can bring a voice to those who have been silenced.
