Director Statement

I’ve always enjoyed the collaborative nature of filmmaking. Surrounding yourself with knowledgeable, talented people will almost always raise the level of your production. But you have to be receptive to their creative input and demonstrate a willingness to accept their ideas when they really add value to your creative vision.

Actor, writer, and director David Caffey approached me early in 2023 with a treatment he had been working on. He wanted to use it as an acting vehicle for his own reel and was interested in bringing on a director. I immediately saw the potential in the world and the characters he had created and as I listened to his story, I drew creative and visual inspiration from The Andy Griffith Show, Fargo, The Ladykillers, and even physical comedies like Liar, Liar.

I pitched my vision for how I would execute the story, which took his idea into the realm of comedy and David agreed. We spent the next few weeks collaborating on the script and by the end of March 2023 we had a final draft and a plan in place to shoot in September.

Sadly, David’s cancer returned and we had to delay the start of filming due to his treatments. By January 2024 we were ready to move forward once again, but David had to leave the project. He gave us his blessing to continue on without him. Only weeks before filming began, David passed away after a long cancer battle.

This film was made in loving memory of David Caffey, a kind and talented man who was a fixture in the Memphis film community. I’m honored that he came to me with his idea and entrusted me with bringing it to life. I like to think that the humor, warmth, and the general “feel good” tone of That’s My House is a reflection of all that David Caffey was in this life.

Enjoy.
