What is Thalassophilia?

"Thalassophilia", written by Simon C. Hussey and based on characters and situations created by Simon C. Hussey, Des Hussey, and Justin Clow for the stage, explores several complex and interwoven themes:

1. Rebellion and Revolution
The story revolves around a clandestine group, the Mycelium Underground, fighting against oppressive forces to rewrite the script of existence. This theme is reflected in their efforts to transcend the control of the Lord of Benben and the cosmic forces dictating their reality.

2. Existentialism and Free Will
Characters grapple with their roles in a predetermined script versus their ability to forge their own destinies. The dialogue often touches on existential horror, the fear of living in endless cycles, and the possibility of transcending barriers to create new realities.

3. Sacrifice and Transformation
Sacrifice is a recurring motif, symbolizing the cost of change and progress. From Marley Jacobs losing his eye to the Investigator consuming the eyeball, these acts represent the transformative power of sacrifice in achieving greater goals.

4. Chaos and Order
The Snake, a demon of chaos, embodies the threat of total entropy and disorder. The struggle to contain or redirect this chaos highlights the tension between maintaining order and embracing the unknown.

5. Cosmic and Temporal Intrigue
The screenplay delves into the manipulation of space-time, transposition, and the rewriting of reality. The characters navigate a labyrinthine plot involving temporal anomalies, encrypted story files, and cosmic artifacts like the Deus Ex Machina.

6. Identity and Purpose
Many characters, including Dionysus and the Investigator, question their roles and identities within the larger narrative. The search for meaning and understanding of their place in the omniverse is central to their journeys.

7. Collaboration and Betrayal
The Mycelium Underground is a collective effort, but internal conflicts, sabotage, and betrayal complicate their mission. The tension between unity and individual agendas drives much of the drama.

8. Mythological and Symbolic References
The screenplay incorporates mythological figures like Seshat, Dionysus, and Ariadne, blending ancient archetypes with futuristic and surreal elements. Symbols like the Thread of Hope and the Ten Watch add layers of meaning to the narrative.

9. Reality as a Construct
The story questions the nature of reality, suggesting it is malleable and subject to rewriting. This theme is reinforced by the characters' ability to alter their scripts and the omnipresent influence of the Weird Circle.

10. Jazz and Improvisation
Jazz serves as a metaphor for embracing uncertainty and improvisation in the face of chaos. Characters are encouraged to "make something up" and adapt to the unpredictable flow of events.

These themes collectively create a rich tapestry of philosophical, mythological, and speculative ideas, making "Thalassophilia" a thought-provoking exploration of existence, rebellion, and transformation.
