Joaquín Asencio (born in Puebla de Cazalla, Spain, in 1978) studied cinema and television at Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, alma mater of directors like Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee and Oliver Stone. In the course of his stay at the university, he wrote, edited and directed seven short films and worked in different crew positions in about thirty of them. In 2001, he directed his thesis, The Censor, which was screened at more than fifty international festivals, winning important prizes.
Back in Spain, Asencio founded the production company Lemendu. The first project brought to light was the short film Hombres de Paja (Straw Men, 2005), a film noir.
Later, he directed several music videos and worked as a director for the Antena 3 TV show "El rastro del crimen". He also worked as an editor and producer in the documentary "Pueblos sin Camino" (Towns Without Road, 2008) and the short films La última boda (The last wedding, 2009) and Salas S.A.L. (2011). In 2009, the Departmental Council of Andalusia granted me with financial aid for the development of the live action feature film "El último bandolero" (The last brigand).
In 2014, he directed the TV show "The Box", a late night show with humor and culture sections.
In 2017, he produced and edited the documentary “Altair: 50 años”, which told the story of a very successful school in a working-class neighborhood in Seville.
In 2018, he made “Tenguerengue”, as a one-man band, while developing the feature films “Badminton” (written by Juan Velarde) and “White Blank” (written by Palacio Rojo), and getting ready to pre-produce the documentary “Los Negros” (“The Black Brotherhood of Seville”, directed by Palacio Rojo).
