Giselle Ilaoa is a motivated and aspiring filmmaker, with a passion for telling stories that positively represents her Pasifika/Māori community. Born and raised in Pōneke, Giselle briefly spent five years living in the Gold Coast, Australia before moving to Tāmaki Makaurau to study at the University of Auckland/Waipapa Taumata Rau, majoring in Screen Production and Global Studies. She later expanded her craft by completing a Diploma in Film and Television Production (Level 6) at Yoobee South Seas Film School. At a young age, Giselle noticed the lack of meaningful representation of her community, and she hopes to bring about positive change and understanding through the power of storytelling.
This film is a love-letter to the eldest daughter in Pasefika households, women who I have been raised by and have known in my life. I want to be able to create this film that represents their experience and perhaps, others within the community, to highlight Samoan culture, the patriarchy within, but also our fierce devotion to our 'aiga (family).
