Tatreez

A visual lament for a shared land, told through the traditional Palestinian craft of Tatreez (embroidery) to explore layers of collective trauma and unresolved grief.

This film is a cinematic elegy for a landscape yearned for by both Palestinians and Israelis. It moves beyond traditional narrative, expressing the sorrow of the land through music, form, and the traditional local practice of Tatreez.

Using digital "stitching", the work translates the pixel-like textures of folk embroidery into visual metaphors of visibility and concealment. Through the artist's own gaze—exposed or hidden—the film reflects on the condition of women as a sensitive indicator of broader social realities, where layered catastrophes do not cancel one another but accumulate into a profound, persistent love for the land.

Director Statement

This work is a visual reflection on the fragments of shared trauma and the elusive nature of historical memory. Born out of the silence and upheaval of recent events, the film seeks to capture the intangible weight that remains when the headlines fade.

Rather than providing fixed answers, the piece functions as a space for contemplation—an ethical and aesthetic exploration of a landscape marked by complex histories. My intention was to create a visceral experience that moves beyond traditional narrative, inviting the viewer to engage with the subtle, often overlooked echoes of our collective past. It is my modest eulogy for lives shaped by loss, seeking a path toward comfort through the language of art.
