Appleby's films have screened in festivals in São Paulo, Rome, Cannes, London, Seattle, and Minneapolis among others. He is a published author, and long time member of the Writers Guild of America West.

Appleby has work in the permanent collection of MOMA, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. He has written and rewritten screenplays and treatments for some of the biggest names in the film industry including Warren, Mimi, Bruce and Harvey, among others.
