Taking Iacanga
"Taking Iacanga" reveals the story behind a legendary music festival held in Brazil in the 70's and 80's. Under military law, open-air events were prohibited. Overcoming politic difficulties, the festival was the biggest hippie gathering in Brazil. It was considered the Brazilian version of Woodstock, with musical performances of brilliant Brazilian artists such as Gilberto Gil and João Gilberto.

Graduated in Journalism, Thiago Mattar worked at the Brazilian Cinematheque in São Paulo as film curator at film showings dedicated to short films. In 2010, Thiago directed the web documentary "Laerte" about a Brazilian transgender cartoonist. “Taking Iacanga” is his first feature film, about a music festival held in Brazil in the 70's and 80's.
The memories of the Águas Claras Festival has been lost, even thought it was a pioneering event in the history of Brazilian open-air music festivals. For ten years, I dedicated myself to rescuing this story of the struggle against middle- of-the-road, reactionary attitudes and to the celebration of our musical diversity. For both me and the crew, the production of this documentary is our most important contribution to Brazilian historiography and iconography, and we would like to dedicate "Taking Iacanga" to everyone who still believes in the revolutionary power of music!
