Shonnie Jackson is from Miami, Florida and studied Journalism & Broadcast Media at Florida International University where she earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Communications and became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. She is now in her final semester of earning her Master’s of Fine Arts from the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, TV/Film Production track.
TV is and has always been a major part of her life. Shonnie suffers from Sickle Cell Disease and as a child, grew up in and out of the hospital due to a Sickle Cell Pain Crisis. Her illness kept her indoors or hospitalized, with nothing to do besides write short stories, play with Barbie Dolls and watch TV. Shonnie grew up with beloved 90s sitcoms such as "Moesha", "Kenan and Kel", "Sister, Sister", and plenty more. Another thing she took comfort in was watching TV with her parents. They didn’t want to watch children’s programming so she was left watching some TV shows that may not have been completely age appropriate, but these times are some of the fondest memories she has, despite the pain and circumstances she was enduring. Somewhere along the way Shonnie developed a passion for storytelling and evoking emotion out of audiences. Wherever she ends up, she wants her work to help audience members get through the trials they face on an everyday basis. Just as watching television helped her and her parents get through their difficult times.
Shonnie is also the writer, director and producer of "The Put Down" web series which is about the urban millennial dating scene in Miami, FL. "The Put Down" has garnered over 20K views on YouTube, been screened at several festivals and has won “Best New Media” at the Houston Black Film Festival 2017 and “Best Director, Web Series” at the Hollywood, Florida Film Festival 2017. With The Put Down being the first thing she ever released for public consumption, she was immensely proud of its reception. She often compares the experience to child birth, “it’s like you’re pregnant with this idea and you develop it until it’s ready. Then you produce it and go through all the labor pains that make you question why the hell you ever did this to begin with, but by the end of it you’re in love with this new bundle of joy that is totally you and then you want to do it all over again.” She did do it all over again when she completed season two of the series this summer. She also Executively Produced the 2018 American Black Film Festival’s officially selected narrative feature, "The Flea", which revolves around a day in the life of a flea market manager in Miami’s very own USA Flea Market.
Currently, Shonnie is in Los Angeles completing three television scripts to add to her portfolio. She has just completed her role as a TV Development intern at Paramount Pictures and has also previously interned as a Development intern at Macro Ventures. Working at these companies encouraged her to launch her own, which she entitled Blue Milk Entertainment, LLC. Upon graduation in December, she hopes to start her career in the television industry as a writer.
