How far can critics of American foreign policy go before we call them “traitors?”
It’s no surprise when there’s a backlash against critics who raise conspiratorial policy and political questions at a time of immense human suffering. But in a guest essay today, Peter Beinart makes the case that attaching the label “traitor,” even to those whose comments have drawn bipartisan jeers, is a mistake.
“It’s wrong morally because rhetorical intimidation can easily become legal persecution,” writes Beinart. “And it’s wrong conceptually because domestic dissenters are rarely the marionettes of foreign foes.”
In this essay, Beinart shares a nuanced, historical understanding of why “telling Americans they’re being duped by a warmongering, globalist elite” has remained a popular charge for over 200 years. The former U.S. Representative Tulsi Gabbard and the conservative commentator Tucker Carlson have reaped attention at home and in Russia for their outsize claims.
Beinart explains that “Americans who don’t share Mr. Carlson’s racial views still find it galling that politicians and pundits who lauded America’s wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya can appear on television to promote their latest hawkish stance without being reminded of the disasters those wars became.”

Clarification statement from the Ministry of Economy and Planning
Following what was circulated in some media outlets, quoting a statement by the Secretary-General of the Tunisian General Labor Union, Mr. Noureddine Tabboubi, regarding the assignment of the Ministry of Economy and Planning to foreign bodies represented by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) to finance and prepare the development plan 2023-2025 and the strategic vision for Tunisia 2035, the Ministry of Economics and Planning provide the following illustration,
The Ministry of Economy and Planning has launched the preparation of the development plan since the beginning of February 2022, relying on purely Tunisian competencies, emphasizing in the methodology prepared for this purpose on the embodiment of effective participatory, where 72 working teams were created at the state level and 36 sectoral committees at the national level, The attendance and contribution of more than 3000 participants so far, including qualified representatives of professional structures and national organizations, especially the Tunisian General Labor Union, which chairs some of these committees, and representatives of civil society and associations concerned with development affairs.
This embodies the ministry's keenness that the work of preparing the plan and its outputs stem from the perceptions and proposals of the parties, sectors and all the actors in the national arena.
As for the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), its valuable role is limited to providing a financial gift for the assignment of a Tunisian studies office specialized in development fields to accompany the administration in the process of preparing the vision and plan and to assist in the formulation of project cards emanating from the work of the sectoral committees and regional work teams that will be submitted for financing, as well as developing a marketing plan for the scheme.
The intervention of the studies office that is being selected is according to a request for proposals by placing expertise at the disposal of the administration in specific areas. Experts cannot interfere in the development of national options and trends that are exclusively covered by public interventions. Note that the initial version of Tunisia Vision 2035 was prepared by the Tunisian administration and is available on the ministry's website and is currently being developed in cooperation with the Tunisian Institute for Strategic Studies.
The ministry also confirms that no foreign party has any involvement in drawing the features and content of the plan, which is confirmed by the work of the regional and sectoral committees or in crystallizing the strategic vision.
From this point of view, the Ministry of Economy and Planning reiterates that such works and programs can only be a purely Tunisian work, believing in what our country is rich in of high competencies in all disciplines that have been partnered from all sites, including administration and national organizations And professional structures, civil society and others, and seize this occasion to thank all the contributors to the work of preparing the plan, whether at the level of the authorities or sectors, for their valuable work and constructive ideas to come up with a development plan that responds to the national goals, with thanks to the German Development Agency for its financial support In choosing a Tunisian studies office to support these efforts.
The Ministry of Economy and Planning calls on all actors from various locations to continue to contribute to the formulation of national plans, directions and policies to get out of the severe economic and financial crisis that the country is going through.
The ministry extends its thanks to the Tunisian General Labor Union for its valuable contributions in preparing the plan and calls on it to be an active and constructive party in maintaining social stability and contributing to crystallizing solutions to get out of this crisis. Khaled Menchaoui
