Director Biography - Isabel Medarde

BIO
Isabel Medarde (León, 1974) is a film and video producer and director.
She studied in Madrid (Spain) cinematography at the TAI (1994-95), Drama at the ESAD (1996-2001) and photography at EFTI (2014).
In 2008 she began her career as an independent producer with Bambara Zinema and in 2010 she created, together with Sergio González, Laboratorio Bambara, a platform for audiovisual research whose main interests are the search for new languages, applied photography (timelapse, stopmotion) and experimentation in the field of visual and sound (Surya Namaskara, Smaug). The philosophy they defend above all is shared knowledge: copyleft, free software and opensource. They are currently researching Open Cinema, as collaborators of the Apertusº - Open Source Cinema project, as ambassadors of the Spanish-speaking community and beta tester of Axiom Beta Camera, the first open digital cinema camera.

In her personal projects, Isabel continues this path of experimentation in the search for her own language and expression, which extends to reinventing the meaning of film production beyond media and technique. The territories she has explored most are film essay, and first-person cinema (Shakespeare was not there, Pressure, depression, expression, Le Pasquin Poético). In February 2018 she received the II Villalar Scholarship of Contemporary Artistic Creation of Castilla y León for the province of León to carry out his project La espiral marvellous, an investigation into the pioneers of cinema that tries to rescue them from oblivion. The voice of the council, a WebDoc study on Minor Local Entities, councils and communal goods, which he is carrying out together with Teresa García Montes, should be highlighted in collective projects.

As a film producer, she has produced, among others, La proeza, La trampa, Killrats, La dantesca escena and La casa Brown by Isaac Berrokal, which have garnered countless selections and awards in the most diverse festivals, including some historical and first-rate ones such as Sitges, TIFF Transilvania, San Sebastian Fantastic Film Festival, Nocturna, Quercus, Astorga City Film Festival, among many others.

Teaching
In the Poetic Laboratory (a program by Víctor M. Díez and León City Council) as a teacher in the Audiovisual Workshop for Creative Expression (2017) and teacher in Cultural Resources and Creativity (2018). Stopmotion Workshop Animated stories about life stories in collaboration with DEAC - MUSAC (2018). Short film workshops for young people at risk of exclusion in AAVV Orcasitas Sur (2005), Espacio Vías (2008-2011) and Espacio Mestizo - Fundación Juan Soñador (2016 - present).

Director Statement

As Vlad Dorofte writed about my short film The Slot:

"[...] All these inceptive surrealist artistic explorations are of vital importance for decoding and understanding Isabel Medarde’s film as they are generating the context of her cinematic initiative. Therefore, while at a writing level Un Chien Andalou seems to be entirely focusing on an absurd visual extravagance, Medarde’s LA RAINURE (The Slot) feels closer to the psychoanalytic conduct of The Seashell and The Clergyman (Germaine Dulac) looking to make use of a series of interpretative symbols in order to touch various topics such as religion, sexual desire or social prejudice. It is easy to identify a structural reference to Freud’s interpretation of dreams. Just like in his theory, coincidentally or not, Isabel Medarde’s silent film builds up around the woman-dreamer’s erotic drives that crystallise at an unconscious level. It commences with a grooming process that continues with a flirt around a pool table and ends up in a half women, half men ‘quartet’ displaying a preference of mixed physical attraction - between both opposed and same gender couples".
