Vanessa Sandre is a filmmaker originally from Brazil and based in Toronto, Canada. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Film and a Master's degree in Literature focused on Women and Gender Studies. Vanessa has cultivated a diverse career as a screenwriter, producer, director, and performer for the last 14 years. As a Latina immigrant and artist, she finds inspiration in crafting narratives that amplify underrepresented voices through a decolonial and intersectional feminist lens.
As a writer-director, Vanessa has helmed the award-winning narrative shorts "Nuvem" (Cloud, 2014) and "O Prazer é Todo Meu" (The Pleasure is All Mine, 2023). The latter addresses the taboo subject of female sexuality in old age. Premiered at the end of 2023, the film has been selected for over 30 film festivals worldwide and has won 16 awards.

Why is female sexuality such a taboo subject? Why is so rare to see women’s sexual journey portrait on screen?
The idea for this film was born during my studies of feminist film theory and my desire to present a female perspective as a counterpoint to the “male gaze” so dominant in the film industry. I was highly influenced by European feminist theorists, like Laura Mulvey, and female directors, like Agnès Varda and Chantal Akerman, who brought a new light to telling women’s stories.
That is how “THE PLEASURE IS ALL MINE” was born, as a statement of female agency through an elderly woman's journey to discover pleasure and explore her sexuality. We witness Amélia and her bittersweet experimentation towards freedom and pleasure, but instead of the typical shame or embarrassment associated with these topics, there is humor, joy and relief in her self discovery.
