THE DANUBE RIVER
Flowing through the heart of Europe, the Danube connects ten countries and millions of lives.
Along its 172-kilometre Slovak stretch, two conservationists from BROZ and WWF Slovakia embark on a running journey to explore one of Europe’s last great river landscapes. Their route leads through ancient floodplain forests, hidden side channels, and places where crucial decisions are shaping the river’s future.
As the journey unfolds, the Danube reveals both its extraordinary beauty and its fragility. More than a story about a river, this is an intimate encounter with a living force that has shaped landscapes, wildlife, and human lives for centuries.
All you need to do is come to its banks and listen.

Viliam Bendík is a Slovak documentary filmmaker, director and producer. After more than a decade in international corporate management, he turned his focus to independent filmmaking and began developing documentary projects centred on landscape, history, human resilience and environmental themes.
His early documentary "12CH Vysoké Tatry Trail" received several awards at Slovak film festivals. This was followed by "Kroky na hrane" (Steps on the Edge), a documentary inspired by the story of Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler and their escape from Auschwitz.
His latest film, "The Danube River" (orig. DUNAJ, 2026), created in collaboration with BROZ and WWF Slovakia, explores the relationship between people and one of Europe's last great wild rivers.
Through his production label BENDIK DOCS, he develops author-driven documentary films that connect personal journeys with broader cultural, historical and environmental stories.
BENDIK DOCS is an independent Slovak documentary production label founded by filmmaker Viliam Bendík. The company focuses on author-driven documentaries exploring nature, landscape, history and contemporary social issues. Its films combine strong visual storytelling with authentic human experiences, often unfolding through physical journeys and expeditions. BENDIK DOCS develops projects for festival, educational and public audiences in Slovakia and abroad.
When I first set out to follow the Danube from its source to the Black Sea, I was driven by curiosity. How can a single river connect so many countries, cultures and landscapes, yet remain largely invisible in our everyday lives?
As the journey unfolded, I discovered that the Danube is much more than a geographical feature. It is a living ecosystem, shaped by people and constantly shaping their lives in return. Along the way, I met conservationists, scientists and local communities working to protect the river and restore habitats that have disappeared over decades of human intervention.
What inspired me most was their belief that meaningful change is possible. Rather than focusing on environmental problems alone, I wanted to show the people behind the solutions and their deep connection to the river.
DUNAJ is therefore both a personal journey and a story about responsibility. It is an invitation to see the Danube not only as a river that flows through Europe, but as a shared natural heritage whose future depends on the choices we make today.
