THE BALCONY
On the twentieth floor of a cold Atlanta high-rise, Lisamarie, a young woman on the edge of adulthood, leans over a balcony railing with the weight of the world pressing down on her. She’s trapped between survival and surrender, staring at the void below as her own reflection in the sliding glass door dares her to let go.
The short film unfolds in a tense, intimate chamber piece—a confrontation between a girl and her fractured self.
Inside the apartment, chaos simmers. Lisamarie hides bruises, muffles her pain, and masks her reality with forced smiles. Every object in the room—the mirror, the bed, the locked door—becomes a symbol of entrapment, her environment echoing the invisible cage of abuse and manipulation.
As the story progresses, the balcony becomes more than just a setting—it transforms into a battleground of identity. The film blurs the line between memory, imagination, and present danger, revealing flashpoints of Lisamarie’s past: childhood innocence scarred by trauma, fleeting moments of beauty interrupted by violence, and the ever-present voice of Boss, whose control lingers even in his absence.
The balcony, once a symbol of escape, becomes a testament of survival. Instead of falling, Lisamarie chooses to rise—bloodied but unbroken.
Tone & Themes
Raw & Visceral: The film is stripped to its essentials—claustrophobic, emotionally charged, with tension you can feel in every breath.
Psychological Duality: The mirror and balcony serve as metaphors for choice, reflection, and transformation.
Cycle of Survival: At its core, The Balcony is not about whether Lisamarie will jump—it’s about whether she will reclaim her life, for herself and for her daughter.
Suicide Prevention Message: The story emphasizes the silent battles survivors face and reframes survival not as passive endurance but as an act of rebellion against despair.
The Balcony is a hauntingly intimate short film that fuses social realism with psychological thriller elements. It captures the fragile, universal moment where pain collides with possibility—where choosing to live is the bravest act of all.
