Sweet Molly

As the writer and director of this film, my journey began with a personal and profound connection to the subject matter. Having grown up in the mainstream Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) and choosing to leave it over 15 years ago, I found myself uniquely drawn to the stories of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS). This film is my endeavor to shed light on the harrowing realities of child brides, polygamy, and abuse that occur within some FLDS communities.

Throughout the writing and filming process, I had the invaluable opportunity to meet with multiple ex-FLDS survivors. Their insights and personal stories greatly enriched my research, allowing me to present a more authentic and informed narrative. This collaboration was crucial in shaping the film's direction and ensuring that the portrayal of these sensitive issues was both respectful and accurate.

This project is more than just a film to me; it's a platform to give a voice to those who have suffered and survived these oppressive cults. My own background in the LDS church, despite its stark differences from the FLDS, particularly in terms of polygamy, provided me with a nuanced perspective on the subject. It allowed me to explore the subtle similarities and profound contrasts between these sects with a sense of empathy and understanding.

Through this film, I aim to bring these hidden stories to the forefront, not just to inform but to evoke a sense of empathy and solidarity with the survivors. It's a tribute to their courage and resilience, and a call to action for awareness and change. My hope is that this film will contribute to the ongoing dialogue and support for individuals who have been impacted by such extreme and closed communities.
