Director Biography - Bogdan Pușlenghea, Ovidiu Zimcea

[Ovidiu Zimcea] Graduated the BA (Hons) Film & Television Production course at the University of Westminster in 2010.

I've been freelancing since then, working mostly on short form documentaries. Directed two short architecture documentaries in 2019. I've also composed music for film since my years at University and work as a videographer at the local German Theatre.

Started working on my debut feature documentary film, Swamp City, together with Bogdan Pușlenghea in 2018.

Director Statement

[Ovidiu Zimcea] Unlike my co-director, who is ten years older than me, I grew up just barely missing all of the defining events and happenings in my hometown, because I wasn't old enough, and because I grew up in a Christian Orthodox household, which frowned upon these kinds of manifestations (punk, rock, electronic music parties). Strangely enough, my parents were however owners of a (then legal) pirate cassette firm at the start of the 90s. So I grew up curious about music and music technology. After years of hearing about these amazing times in the 90s (the ones I had missed), I wanted to try and relive them through our subjects' memories. Bogdan had already started filming (again I had missed the party), but we found each-other when the project had been on hold for a long while. We connected and found that we were just as passionate about this (although he brings a nostalgic perspective compared to mine) and we finished this thick-skinned documentary that lets me know just what I've missed. I feel it is less about music and more about the importance and fragility of communities.
