Breakthrough Screenplay Semi-Finalist
By night, I served as a Department of Defense explosives inspector for the U.S. Air Force. By day, I built one of the country’s first internet gaming cafes. That unlikely double life, discipline and danger on one side, entrepreneurial chaos on the other, became the foundation for my debut screenplay, Surf City.
This autobiographical true story captures the grit, humor, and heart of launching a digital frontier from a snow‑covered coffee shop, all while balancing the demands of military service. It’s a funny, heartfelt, and often stressful account of ambition colliding with collapse, and of community born in the unlikeliest of places.
Now based in Winter Park, Florida, I’ve poured everything into this single screenplay: a raw, irreverent chronicle of resilience, reinvention, and the chaos of building something from nothing.
I believe some stories can only be told by the person who lived them. Surf City is one of those stories, a collision of grit, humor, and reinvention, where ordinary people are swept into extraordinary change. Drawn from my lived experiences in 1990s Anchorage, this is not a Silicon Valley myth but the true account of a snow‑covered cafe running on a single T1 line at the edge of the digital frontier.
As a U.S. Air Force explosives inspector transporting hazardous cargo, I spent years inside systems built to manage risk and chaos. That perspective shaped my storytelling: I’m drawn to characters who improvise under pressure, who weaponize wit and desperation to carve out a legacy.
This screenplay isn’t just nostalgia; it’s a true‑story biopic about the messy, irreverent, and often hilarious birth of the online world. My goal is to honor the real‑life hustle, the humor, and the heartbreak of building something from nothing. It’s a confession about what it truly takes to start a revolution, not in a Silicon Valley boardroom, but in a chaotic Alaskan cafe, far from the spotlight.
