Director Biography - Holly M. Kaplan

Director: Holly M. Kaplan is a Chinese-American filmmaker born and raised in New York City. Inspired by ties to her mixed Cantonese heritage, Holly is invested in bringing narratives about diversity and the Asian diaspora to the forefront with a focus on storytelling from the feminine perspective. In 2022, Holly was chosen for NALIP & NETFLIX's "Latino Lens: Narrative Short Film Incubator for Women of Color" to write, direct, and produce SUNFLOWER GIRL. She received her BA in Film & Media Arts at American University and completed a filmmaking program at FAMU International Prague, where she shot her student short (THE LESSON) on 16mm. Holly has served as an apprentice to the late Independent Director/Producer Ben Barenholtz and assisted Executive Producer/Director Lisa Soper and Director Alex Pillai on PRETTY LITTLE LIARS: ORIGINAL SIN (HBO/Max).

Director Statement

I collaborated closely with the singer-songwriter ÊMIA to create a music video that conveys the concealed feelings that women often experience in a society that judges our values based on our superficial appearance, supposed positivity, and social media accomplishments. Our initial idea was to create a music video with references that pre-date the social media age, inspired by Sofia Coppola's "Marie Antoinette" and the candid style of early to late aughts music videos we grew up watching on MTV. As we worked on the idea, a campy storyline emerged that emphasized the track's tongue-in-cheek lyrics on the reality of existing as a woman in our social media-dominated world. The concept is to imagine a fantasy world where we can escape the exploitation and demands placed on modern women and individuals under patriarchy in our materialistic society. A world where we can simply indulge and exist together without any pressure or expectations from anyone to appear under the guise of being both constantly busy and happy.
Collaborating with others and elevating the voices of women is the most rewarding part of the creative process. I strongly believe in the importance of showcasing women's perspectives. A no-budget music video made by a crew of majority women and non-binary creatives, "Super Fun Party Girl" was also sponsored by local femme designers and brands: Love, Bonito and Meadowland World; in addition to Beacon's Closet's ”POC creatives clothing loan program”. - Holly M.
