Belmaya is an emerging filmmaker in Nepal, aged 27. Born in a hill village near Pokhara, Belmaya has had very little formal education. Orphaned at the age of 9, she married at 19 and had a baby daughter. In 2014, aged 21, she embarked on a documentary filmmaking training and has made two films, Educate Our Daughters (selected for 7 international film festivals and winner of Best Short Film at UK Asian Film Festival 2019) and Rowing Against the Flow (commissioned by Thomson Reuters Foundation). She is both co-director and subject of Sue Carpenter’s feature documentary, I Am Belmaya (2021).
