Director Biography - Emilio Broodryk

I am the director of Stroke of Luck, 25 year old Emilio Alexander Broodryk. I was born in the Philippines and have been living in Sydney, Australia for most of my life. I became interested in film at an early age, after watching my mother and her siblings short films when I was 9. I soon started making Youtube videos, and a series of short films while also gaining an interest in photography, taking many photos wherever I went, with a focus on urban and natural landscapes throughout Sydney and eventually, the world. Over the years as my skills progressed I did a series of music videos, fashion advertisements and varied videography gigs for small upcoming artists and creatives, fine tuning my technical abilities and building a network of peers. Along this process, I worked with award winning cinematographer Pawel Atchel, testing out innovative cinema grade cameras that he had designed, helping me understand each component and its relationship, culminating in a high level image. Continuing with my passion, at the age of 20, I hoped to gain a formal qualification, enrolling in TAFE, completing a cert iiii in screen media. I then enrolled in Western Sydney Uni in hopes of committing to a longer film focused course, surrounding myself with similarly minded collaborators. After one year of my three year Bachelor at Western Sydney Uni, I made a difficult decision to move, setting my sights on AFTRS due to its impressive reputation, film specificity and overall seemingly more competitive environment. During this time I became an avid cinephile, focusing more on the conceptual and historical side of filmmaking, helping me to evolve and become a more intentional and knowledgeable creator. Now, after just completing year two at AFTRS and working on my debut short documentary, Stroke of Luck, I hope to further pursue my interest in directing, finding a new found confidence, through experience working alongside a talented and experienced team.
