Director Statement

An instructor once told me the best stories are based on life experiences; so I present to you Storey’s Adventure. The narrative is based on a culvert my cousin dared me to crawl through as a child and my experience starting at a new school and meeting a group of like-minded creatives. This short film began as a composition I wrote for a high school orchestra final in 2017. Originally titled, Forest’s Adventure, the music inspired my first drawings of Storey’s friendly monster, Gregory, in 2021 and a comic in March 2022. Six months later, I adapted the comic into a short animated film for my senior capstone. The show, The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, inspired me to utilize stop-motion for my close-up shots on Storey’s hands, and the music is the result of a collaboration with my composer, Emerson Wright, to bring my original composition to life. To capture the homage of early 2000’s children animated television and to maintain the style of the comic, I scanned in traditional watercolor, India ink, and pencil background paintings. I intend to submit this film to as many festivals as I can to share my story and inspire other animators to experiment with different styles of animation.
