Experiencing Interruptions?

Stillness

While the lock down forces us to stop and be still, our appliances, machines and even the wind continue at their usual pace, unnoticed against the stillness now present in our homes.

This film explores how our forced time of inactivity collides with the ever increasing speed of change in our world.

Director Biography - Ben Lawrence

As a teenager growing up in suburban Norwich, I discovered an affinity with creativity and formed a band at thirteen with my brother and a few friends. Music continues to be a great adventure for me, subsequently overflowing into my work in film.

Films have always had a way of transporting me and I vividly remember sitting at a computer in a future careers class and googling 'film director'. At the time it felt like an unachievable goal.

It wasn't until my early twenties that filmmaking became more than a fantasy, as I started experimenting with my own writing and directing styles and creating films on small budgets. More recently, I have launched my own production company with business partner Sarah Ballard. The Family Table is an outlet for our creativity, both in filmmaking and music, and also works with clients to tell beautiful stories.

My inspiration stems from how the existential impacts the every day, finding beauty in tragedy and drama in the subtle nuances of life. I have a passion to tell stories that make you think and that connect us to our humanity, revealing simple truths in our every day.

Collaboration is key to my work, finding like minded creatives to produce unique perspectives. I enjoy unearthing fresh talent and helping others to expand their creative thinking. Collaboration brings out the best in everyone and I am positive that no great film maker gets there alone.

I hope to write and direct feature length films and TV shows - focussing on stories that meet people where they are and entertain them in fresh and interesting ways. My approach leans towards the untypical, finding new ways to challenge the status quo, while empowering the individual who is watching.

Director Statement

Stillness - something we rarely encounter in our nine to five media driven consumerist lives. When I was younger boredom was an experience I would regularly have, but now I have my phone, social media, Youtube, Netflix and a whole host of other things in my house and life designed to keep my brain from ever having to exist in stillness.

I wanted to make this film during the 2020 Covid-19 lock down to consider the impact of a forced time of inactivity in our lives - stillness. Something that if we were to really embrace, would undoubtedly transform us.

How will the lessons we've learnt during this time change our futures? Be still.
