Director Statement

The Genesis:
SRIJAN began as a deeply personal exploration of belonging and self-discovery. Growing up in a rapidly modernizing India, I found myself questioning what it means to return home—not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually. Phalguni's journey became my lens to examine how perfectionism, ambition, and the weight of expectations can distance us from our roots.

Why This Story Matters:
In a world obsessed with progress, we often forget that true growth sometimes requires us to slow down, listen to our origins, and reconnect with the soil from which we grew. SRIJAN is not just Phalguni's story; it's a mirror for anyone caught between two worlds—tradition and modernity, achievement and contentment, escape and homecoming.

Visual & Sonic Language:
I deliberately chose warm, earthy tones and natural lighting to evoke the authenticity of rural life. Every frame was composed to feel lived-in, honest, and intimate. The soundscape features pure Indian classical instruments—sitar and esraj—to anchor the narrative in cultural memory without relying on contemporary production techniques. This choice reinforces the film's meditation on heritage and timelessness.

Craft Choices:
As a self-taught 15-year-old filmmaker, I approached every technical decision with intention. The three-act structure moves from disorientation to confrontation to quiet resolution. Dialogue remains sparse and natural—the way people actually speak in villages—allowing silence and gesture to communicate deeper emotions. Editing prioritizes breathing room over pace, inviting the audience into Phalguni's internal journey.

What I Hope Viewers Feel:
When you watch SRIJAN, I want you to feel the dust beneath your feet, the weight of unspoken words, and the quiet courage it takes to come home. Most importantly, I hope you recognize a piece of your own struggle for authenticity in an increasingly complex world.

This film is my love letter to the stories that shaped me, and my invitation to you to rediscover yours.
